Is your mineral makeup really a TRUE mineral makeup?

Here are some tips to ensure you are getting the real-deal every time you shop for Mineral Makeup ie effective, active, value for money!

Ingredients are listed in order of highest concentration to the least. The first 4-5 are the most important as they are generally in the highest concentrations, and make up the "active" ingredients.  If we look at Mineral Makeup, clearly not all mineral makeup ranges are created equal.

As skin aestheticians we are often asked about Mineral Makeup.  Is it really good, why are some better than others, why is it called Mineral makeup? Does my skin really breath through it?  Can I really sleep with it on without it harming my skin?

Like all things in this world, not everything is created equal. A true mineral makeup that is marketed as just that,  should only contain true 'real' minerals dug out of the ground.  If it is a real Mineral Makeup, you will love some of the answers.....

  1. Is it really good?  YES, for a start its natural (from the ground), it can be used straight after a facial or injectables with no risk of irritation (if its a true mineral makeup), it offers great coverage (from light to heavy), it makes eveyone's skin look flawless when the right product is prescribed & application is performed properly , it offers a built in SPF of 20, its quick, easy, and doesnt clog pores or skin.
  2. Why are some better than others? Due to ingredients used, not everything is created equal.
  3. Why is it called Mineral makeup? As its made from pure minerals we mine and harvest out of the ground!
  4. Does my skin really breath through it?  When its a true/real mineral makeup - YES, this is true!
  5. Can I really sleep with it on without it harming my skin? When its a true/real mineral makeup - YES, this is true!

Here I have listed those minerals that should be found in a real/true mineral makeup.
  • titanium dioxide or CI 77891
  • zinc oxide or CI 77497
  • iron oxide or CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499
  • mica or CI 77019
  • sericite
  • magnesium sterate
  • bismuth (oxychloride bismuth chloride) or CI 77163

Talc (or Magnesium Silicate) for the record is also a mineral and miss-represented in cosmetics. To give you the basic information, in its natural form, some talc may contain asbestos, a substance known to cause cancers in and around the lungs when inhaled. HOWEVER, ALL home-use talcum products in Australia and the United States have been asbestos-free by law since the 1970s, and there is very little (if any) evidence linking home-use talc with ANY cancers to date.

As a result a true/real mineral makeup is formulated without any fillers or binders, and results in incredible coverage, application & texture.  To create this 'incredible' performance a true mineral makeup requires high percentages of the concentrated active minerals to be used in the formula.  If you look at your ingredient list on your makeup, where are the active minerals sitting on your label, at the top or the bottom of the list? You want them at the top for it to be effective, since ingredients are listed in diminishing order, minerals should be at the top of the list.

Also, look for an SPF rating on the label.

Some great brands to look out for that are TRUE mineral makeup (just to name a few - there are so many on the market today, no wonder its confusing).  In saying this, most salon specific mineral makeup ranges are formulated with TOTAL skin health in mind (as we use it after medi-facials or injectables - when skin is irritated or broken), so if its confusing, start with your local beauty expert!
